About:

After reading R.J. Palacio’s novel “Wonder” fifth-graders , including student athletes, in Diana Terzi’s class at Lynbrook’s West End School were inspired to play a role in the Random House Choose Kind Campaign, an anti-bullying initiative inspired by the novel. The book tells the story of a boy born with a facial deformity who faces the challenge of being accepted in a mainstream school setting. As part of the Choose Kind Campaign, the class entered the Certified Kind Classroom Challenge.

“My students acted as kindness ambassadors, recognizing every act of kindness from big to small” said Ms. Terzi. “Focusing on being inclusive to all classmates and celebrating our differences, just like in the novel, was our main goal.” Students kept track of their kind acts by placing marbles in a kindness jar, and when the jar was full, they submitted their results to the contest. Because of all the students’ kind deeds, they were officially recognized as a Certified Kind Classroom. Ms. Terzi said that even though the contest is over, her students continue their good work, knowing that random acts of kindness will cause a ripple effect.
